First Step Services, LLC of Durham offers a range of alcohol and drug use outpatient counseling & education: Substance Abuse Education, ADETS/Prime for Life, general outpatient services & Intensive Outpatient Programs.  We offer specialized substance abuse education programs that fit numerous personal, school and pre-trial legal needs. Completing counseling and/or education prior to a court case is considered a “mitigating factor” possibly lessening any punishment that may be required by the court.

Our Intensive Outpatient Programs meet best practice qualifications and are licensed by the State of NC and accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities. We offer individual & family counseling services, short term groups, longer term groups and aftercare programs as well as DWI assessments and DWI education.

First Step is a pre-approved provider by the NC Board of Nursing,  Duke University Employment Assistance Program NC DWI Services for DWI Assessments/counseling/ADETS education, and others. First Step is in network with the major health insurance providers and we do the billing for you.

DMV Evaluations are provided in our Durham Facility. These evaluations are typically required by the NC DMV for driver’s whose licenses have been revoked for DWIs or other substance use related offenses or situations. If you are required to receive a DMV evaluation, contact our Durham Facility at (919) 419-0229. (These are not DOT evaluations required for commercial drivers or other DOT regulated employees.) The cost of a DMV Evaluation is $65.

“My initial impression of everything was a little overwhelmed and intimidated because I didn’t think that the group would be mixed with the people actually trying to stay sober, but it actually turned out to be very informative and a very welcoming group. I know I didn’t talk much but I was listening. I realized that it was very easily could be me that could be struggling with addiction we learned alternative coping mechanism and stress relieving strategies so I do not have to turn to alcohol and/or drugs. I really do appreciate the opportunity to sit and listen to others and hear their experiences.” Anonymous Durham Client

I was hospitalized for another reason, but while I was in the ER, the doctors noticed classic symptoms of alcohol withdrawal and put me through detox. After detox, my psychologist recommended First Step. I went kicking and screaming. At first, I was intimidated by group therapy, but meeting Tonya and Holly made it feel more
